Some Jewish occupations from the 1869 Census in Nove Mesto n.V., Slovakia

In 1869, the community of Nove Mesto nad Vahom was almost 60% Jewish, which is very high.

The listing of occupations reveals, that this town was performing a very important role as a trade center for many goods, which were either produced or needed by the local population in radius of about to 20 km.

Jews had excellent trade connections with other trade centers in this part of the Europe . This can also be seen from the statistics of Jewish marriages , where the broom quite often was from another town, sometimes even as far as Galicia, Budapest, Hamburg,Vienna and other places of the Austro Hungarian monarchy.

Jews were living also in villages, but there their occupations were usually Inn keepers or Butchers.

This list of occupations is not yet complete and is only a beginning of a series, which I am working on. There are other towns in this area, which have similar history. As time will allow, I will add them to this page, along with other interesting findings.
